Chairmonkey was born inside clinical practice with a clear goal: to redefine the way minimally invasive surgery is approached. We develop a new generation of endoscopic suturing systems designed around real needs.
We don't start from technology. We start from the problem.
We are a company founded by gastroenterologists, with a family history deeply tied to the development and evolution of the specialty. This background is not just context: it is our greatest asset.
For generations, our family has been directly involved in clinical practice, teaching and innovation. This environment has shaped a different way of thinking: ideas don't come from outside, they come from real clinical practice.
Every problem we identify is analyzed by an internal committee of clinical experts, and only solutions with real potential move on to a second phase of external validation with renowned specialists.
In essence, Chairmonkey is the natural evolution of a medical tradition focused on solving real problems.
Felipe Martínez Pérez, gastroenterologist and a pioneer in medical innovation. His doctoral thesis already addressed the development of biopsy devices. He was responsible for introducing magnetic resonance imaging in Andalusia and was a Professor at the University of Seville.
Felipe Martínez Alcalá, gastroenterologist specializing in flexible digestive endoscopy. He has chaired scientific societies in digestive diseases at regional and national level. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Universidad Fernando III-CEU in Seville and has served as medical director at both public and private hospitals. He has received numerous awards, including the gold medal of the digestive endoscopy society.
Five gastroenterologists trained in Spain and abroad, with hands-on experience in advanced endoscopy. This generation includes the main driving force behind Chairmonkey, Álvaro Martínez-Alcalá García.
Endoscopic suturing is today one of the key tools for the development of advanced endoscopy. However, current solutions have significant limitations that hold back their adoption and use in clinical practice.
The problem is not a lack of need. It is a lack of solutions truly adapted to clinical practice.
At Chairmonkey we set out to develop a suturing system that would solve not just one problem, but all of them at once. A system designed from real-world use that fits naturally into the endoscopist's workflow. Our approach has been clear from the start: remove barriers.
Our goal is for endoscopic suturing to stop being a complex, limited technique and become an accessible, reproducible and efficient tool.
Our development model breaks with the traditional approach of medical technology. We start from the problem and build the solution. Engineering doesn't lead the process. It enables it.
We work with technology partners capable of turning a clinical need into a viable technical solution, always focusing on usability, efficiency and safety.
At Chairmonkey we believe that innovation in medicine should reduce complexity, not add to it. Combining deep clinical knowledge with advanced technological development allows us to create solutions that don't just work, but fit naturally into daily practice.
Designing intuitive devices aligned with the way endoscopists naturally work.
Reducing time, steps and unnecessary dependencies in every procedure.
Enabling advanced techniques to be adopted beyond highly specialized centers.
Just as laparoscopy transformed open surgery, endoscopy is redefining the concept of minimally invasive surgery.
Our vision is clear: to drive the development of endoscopic surgery so that it stops being a limited option and becomes an accessible standard.
We are starting with endoscopic suturing. But our goal goes further: to help develop a new way of treating patients.
Leads technical development and product vision. Drives the company's innovation strategy in endoscopy.
Responsible for operations, strategic partnerships and the supply chain.
Financial management, investment planning and oversight of the company's sustainable growth.
We are supported by top international experts in advanced endoscopy, who validate and guide the development of our technology from clinical practice.
MD, PhD, FASGE. A world leader in therapeutic endoscopy with clinical practice in Germany and the United States.
Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital →Head of the Division of Science and Technology for Endoscopy. An international reference in endoscopic resection.
National Cancer Center Hospital →Specialist in digestive endoscopy with extensive clinical experience and contributions to medical device development.
UAB Hospital →Expert physicians in Spain and abroad, future users within their areas of influence, have endorsed our technology with letters of interest to test the device in its early phases.
If you are an endoscopist or specialist and would like to take part in the testing phase, download the letter of interest (LOI) template, sign it and send it to us using the form. Every new endorsement strengthens Chairmonkey's clinical support network.
Download LOI template (PDF)Chairmonkey is currently in the prototyping phase, following the close of a first funding round. Development is at technology readiness level TRL 4–5 and moving towards full-scale functional prototypes.
Upcoming ex vivo and in vivo trials to validate the system's functionality.
Continuous iterations to refine the system before the clinical phases.
Preparing the documentation and regulatory strategy for the clinical phases.
The project is moving forward on solid foundations, combining clinical knowledge, technological development and a clear vision for the future.
The Martínez-Alcalá family, with three generations of physicians specialized in endoscopy, presents an innovative project in endoscopic medicine. They identified the need to improve current techniques and have developed an endoscopic suturing system with two granted patents: one in Spain (2024) and one in the United States (2025).
They noticed a critical gap in the market: there is no effective endoscopic suturing device that works through the working channel. ChairMonkey was created to solve this.
To tackle this problem, they acquired ChairMonkey SL in 2015 and developed an advanced prototype together with leading technology partners. In 2021 they carried out a capital increase that brought expert physicians in the field on board. The system received an award at the ESGE DAYS 2024 congress in Berlin.
Chairmonkey has also received public support through an ENISA loan, funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU and Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
We are a Spanish company committed to boosting invention and technological development in our country, showing that Spain can lead medtech innovation on a global scale.
